Falling Into a Brown Study

Dean Smale

May 1 May 30, 2026

"Brown study” is a 16th-century idiom for deep, pensive and serious thought. Dean Smale’s paintings emerge from exactly that place. Studio hours are spent turning over existential ideas and the stubborn human need to make meaning is expressed in layers of acrylic, beeswax, and oil on plywood. These works, on sustained looking, conceal as much as they reveal. Opening night May 1st (artist talk: 6pm) Exhibition runs through May 30th
